Traffic Operation functions include speed limit requests and analysis, maintenance of highway lighting, traffic signals, school zones, pavement markings, intersection operations, and roadway capacity.
The division is responsible for fabricating traffic signs; maintaining traffic signals and street lighting along most of the State road system within Highlands County; and installing, maintaining, repairing and inspecting all traffic control devices – signs, signals, pavement markings and devices – placed on, over, or adjacent to County-maintained streets or highways to regulate, warn and guide traffic.
Staff also assist with reviewing Maintenance of Traffic for events, Temporary Road Closures, and County projects. They work during inclement weather and are on stand-by 24 hours a day to maintain and preserve the safety of our roadways and the safety of the motoring public.
Traffic Ops crews maintain 45 out of 46 traffic signals in Highlands County, 815 street lights and about 70 school zone flashers. They also maintain over 40,000 signs – from stop signs, street signs, warning signs and regulatory signs to information signs, school signs, object markers and recreational markers.
