The following is a list of road projects underway or planned in Highlands County:

Road Closure Notice for West George Boulevard July 13

Part of West George Boulevard from the corner of West George Boulevard at the existing fuel station to just before HCFR Station 19/Emergency Operations Center will be closed for site work on:  
Monday, July 13  
5-9 a.m.  

Barricades will be in place. Access to the current fuel station from George Boulevard will remain open. 
Local drivers who work in the area – R&B, Station 19 crews, Emergency Management personnel, Extension staff, DOH staff – will need to use U.S. 27 as a bypass in the morning.   
This work is part of ongoing construction at the new Sebring Fuel Station on West George Boulevard.

Roadwork scheduled on Kenilworth Boulevard July 20-24

Highlands County Road & Bridge and Traffic Operations, in coordination with Excavation Point Inc., will perform milling and resurfacing work on Kenilworth Boulevard between Thurston Avenue and Industrial Way from Monday, July 20, through Friday, July 24, 2026. 

During construction, motorists can expect temporary lane closures on Kenilworth Boulevard, as well as periodic closures of intersecting side streets. Detour routes and roadwork signs will be posted to help guide traffic safely through the area. 

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, consider alternate routes when possible, and use caution while traveling through the work zone. Please reduce your speed, follow all posted traffic control devices, and watch for workers and equipment. 

Highlands County appreciates the public's patience as these roadway improvements are completed.

Permanent road closure notice 

Palmetto Avenue in Sebring, between Orange Avenue and Eucalyptus Avenue will be permanently closed beginning Monday, March 31, 2025.

Construction is scheduled to begin next week on the Highlands County Jail expansion project. The portion of Palmetto Avenue mentioned above has been vacated and the roadway and adjacent property will be where the jail expansion is to be built.

Barricades will be in place where Orange Avenue and Eucalyptus Avenue intersect with Palmetto Avenue. This will become an active work zone, and we urge all local traffic to use caution in the area.
